Today, IT leaders address the PC lifecycle across a continuum from control to transformation. Control is geared to optimization, while transformation focuses on the business impact of technology. Though the two approaches differ, they are not in opposition. They strive for the same goals and face similar challenges. As IT leaders provide their workforce with the tools to carry out the corporate mission, they should develop a PC lifecycle strategy that encompasses the key organizational needs of systems management, end-user productivity, business innovation and data-centric security. Read this Dell whitepaper to learn more about the findings of a recent Forrester Consulting study, “Digital Transformers Innovate, Digital Controllers Optimize”. This paper will help clarify the PC lifecycle continuum, from the basics of control to the advanced levels of transformation, so you will be better equipped to determine the needs of your organization on that spectrum.

This eBook offers a practical hands-on guide to deploying, managing and scaling PostgreSQL in various environments, in the public cloud and on-premises. With the ongoing shift towards open-source database solutions, it’s no surprise that PostgreSQL is the fastest growing database. While it’s tempting to simply compare the licensing costs of proprietary systems against that of open source, it is both a misleading and incorrect approach when evaluating the potential for return on investment of a database technology migration. The eBook provides a detailed analysis of planning, day-one, and day-two challenges of PostgreSQL deployments, in the context of potential operating environments: ? Public cloud ? Private cloud ? Private DC (bare metal / VM)

We’ve heard it before. A data warehouse is a place for formally-structured, highly-curated data, accommodating recurring business analyses, whereas data lakes are places for “raw” data, serving analytic workloads, experimental in nature. Since both conventional and experimental analysis is important in this data-driven era, we’re left with separate repositories, siloed data, and bifurcated skill sets. Or are we? In fact, less structured data can go into your warehouse, and since today’s data warehouses can leverage the same distributed file systems and cloud storage layers that host data lakes, the warehouse/lake distinction’s very premise is rapidly diminishing. In reality, business drivers and business outcomes demand that we abandon the false dichotomy and unify our data, our governance, our analysis, and our technology teams. Want to get this right? Then join us for a free 1-hour webinar from GigaOm Research. The webinar features GigaOm analyst Andrew Brust and special guest, Dav

Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks. To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data. This enhanced the IT department's responsiveness to the business, allowed them to shift to real-time inventory, and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs. Operations were simplified by reducing person-hours needed for infrastructure maintenance by 75 percent.

Virtualization does have its dangers, as it incurs greater stress on physical resources. While under utilization of CPU may be a driving factor to virtualize servers, other hardware resources may become overtaxed. Given that a host system has limited ability (depends on application) to page memory used by the guest systems, the most recognized bottleneck to address is physical memory (RAM). Options to programmatically alleviate memory bottlenecks incur performance issues when the disk is re-introduced. Another major component and perhaps less acknowledged is the disk subsystem. In many cases, depending the purpose and application of the guest/virtual systems, the disk bottleneck will be the most significant barrier to performance. Communications service providers are looking for alternative deployment models that will help them support fast-growing network demand. Moving to a virtualized EPC (vEPC) solution can help service providers achieve more cost-e?ective scaling by using standard high-volume servers in place of purpose-built systems. System integrators, software vendors, and platform providers rely on Intel® technologies to deliver the performance and scalability required for vEPC solutions. Intel is also participating in the development of open standards, contributing to the open source community, developing reference architectures, engaging with industry participants, and collaborating on trials that can help facilitate the evolution to vEPC solutions and accelerate network transformation by use of network functions virtualization.

Rewrite the rules of injection molding with 3D Systems thermoplastic additive manufacturing printers and materials. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology is at the heart of a growing trend in mass custom manufacturing as well as functional prototyping. The right additive technologies, materials and finishes are transforming manufacturing. Digital-direct thermoplastic manufacturing offers exceptional quality while opening the door to novel design parameters not possible with injection molding. Thermoplastic additive manufacturing also bypasses the long lead time and up-front investment in injection molding tooling. If you measure your finished parts on the three dimensions: quality, time to market, and cost per cubic inch, in many situations industrial SLS offers a better total value proposition. 3D Systems offers a wide variety of 3D printable thermoplastics, engineered for a range of applications. Historically in the enterprise, Macs have been managed separately from iOS devices in separate consoles, sometimes by different groups within IT. Traditional domain-joined management posed several problems for today’s modern enterprise. Nowadays, managing Macs like mobile devices means they can be configured over the air, without ever having to be domain-joined. That’s a major plus for global organizations, remote workers and companies who use contractors or freelancers. Unifying parallel device environments enables streamlined oversight, management and distribution of content across Macs and iOS devices. With AirWatch® Enterprise Mobility Management, IT can implement a BYOD program and policy for all device types, ensuring personal information remains private. IT has a consistent management experience for all device types and operating systems, enabling a single-pane-of-glass view of all endpoints in an enterprise.

Today’s data, and how that data is used, have changed dramatically in the past few years. Data now comes from everywhere—not just enterprise applications, but also websites, log files, social media, sensors, web services, and more. Organizations want to make that data available to all of their analysts as quickly as possible, not limit access to only a few highly-skilled data scientists. However, these efforts are quickly frustrated by the limitations of current data warehouse technologies. These systems simply were not built to handle the diversity of today’s data and analytics. They are based on decades-old architectures designed for a different world, a world where data was limited, users of data were few, and all processing was done in on-premises data centers.
