Today’s workforce is more mobile than ever before, routinely working whenever and wherever necessary, using a variety of mobile devices and productivity apps. They expect their tools to deliver the capabilities they need to stay productive and efficient. But what if they don’t? When a business doesn’t support its workforce with suitable, properly vetted apps, employees will often download and install the tools they like. This trend, called “Shadow IT,” is almost always a recipe for trouble. One-off, standalone apps don’t conform to business strategy and growth plans, but instead create difficulties — security, compatibility, compliance and technical support — that draw resources away from strategic work.

"Managing and securing endpoints with conventional mobile device management (MDM) or enterprise mobile management (EMM) solutions is time-consuming and ineffective. For this reason, global IT leaders are turning towards unified endpoint management (UEM) solutions to consolidate their management of smartphones, tablets, laptops and IoT devices into a single management console. To increase operational efficiency, maximize data security and deliver on their digital transformation goals, they’ll need a UEM platform that does more than just promise success. The answer is a smarter solution, built for today, that brings new opportunities, threats, and efficiency improvements to the forefront. With Watson™, IBM® MaaS360® UEM features cognitive insights, contextual analytics, and cloud-sourced benchmarking capabilities. It helps you make sense of daily mobile details while managing your endpoints, users, apps, document, and data from one platform."

Security was once largely limited to the confines of an on-premises world, but now it must extend to the cloud, as well as a myriad of mobile devices. Employees and companies now expect increasingly complex interactions with devices, apps, data, and even other users. As many companies struggle to keep up with traditional single-point solutions, and limited budgets, this pressure is creating security blind spots for IT. In a world of evolving threats, it is becoming increasingly impossible to address all of these issues with an on-premises solution. What is needed is a holistic approach to identity-driven security—one that leverages a cloud-scale intelligent security graph to help you protect your business. The rise of the cloud and mobile computing has rapidly changed the nature of enterprise cybersecurity. The old paradigm, where all work was done behind a company firewall, has been breaking down. Employees work not just at the office, but also on the road and at home, on mobile devices and on their own personal computers. They’re no longer using a limited stack of enterprise applications. This paper covers some of the critical security gaps today’s mobile-cloud enterprises must address: • Unsecured devices. Unsecured devices allow users to easily access business data from mobile apps or cloud services simply by entering their credentials into an app or browser on the device. Once on the device, data can be easily compromised or shared with unauthorized, external sources. • Unmanaged apps. These typically include business apps, such as Office 365 productivity apps, that the user has downloaded from a personal app store instead of the enterprise app store. As a result, these apps are not under IT control but can still be used to access business content once the user enters his or her credentials. • Unsanctioned cloud services. Most enterprise cloud services have associated ecosystems of apps and services that integrate using APIs. While the enterprise cloud service might be sanctioned, apps and services from its ecosystem might not be.

And it has to provide all of this without locking customers into a proprietary technology stack.
