Traditionally, rollout of a new software version has been a critical and painful process. In the past, new versions were implemented along with a maintenance period (i.e., service downtime), resulting in loss of business for that period. This downtime was generally acceptable when there were only a few releases a year. But now—in a more fast-paced world of hosted software-as-aservice (SaaS) solutions, increased responsiveness and daily or even more frequent releases—down times are no longer acceptable or a?ordable. Continuous Delivery is a practice used in the software industry to automate and improve the process of software delivery. It is all about adopting practices to release high-quality software fast through automation of the build, test and deployment processes.

The world’s largest organizations are adopting cloudbased infrastructure and services at a dizzying pace. Software as a service (SaaS) offerings such as Salesforce.com and Microsoft Office 365 are among the more popular cloud-based services. When moving services to the cloud, data centers are no longer local, so the end user experience can suffer. A poor or congested Internet connection between the user and the cloud service will mean sluggish application delivery that puts a damper on user productivity and ultimately threatens application usage.

The software as a service (SaaS) model of application delivery, more commonly known as ‘cloud deployment’, in which software features are accessed through a Web browser, is an excellent way for manufacturing companies to get the bene?ts of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems without the need to build additional IT infrastructure. ERP functionality delivered “from the cloud” avoids the complexity and costs that often accompany on premisess ERP implementations, and typically provides a much more favorable total cost of ownership, compared to legacy on premisess deployment. Companies subscribe to the software features that they need and can add new ones as business requirements change, without buying additional servers or storage to support new functionality. The ERP features are the same as for an on premises ERP system, except that it is hosted and maintained on the Cloud provider’s infrastructure.

Datacenter improvements have thus far focused on cost reduction and point solutions.
