The enterprise data center has undergone several major shifts since the introduction of computing as a business resource. Data centers have evolved from mainframes to client/server to virtual servers, and then to being “software defned,” and fnally to their current state of disaggregation. Today, we sit on the precipice of the next major data center transition—the evolution to an intent-based data center (IBDC) (Exhibit 1). Each transition saw the cost of computing decrease and the importance of the network increase, and each enabled organizations to boost the efciency of their data center operations and improve asset utilization—ultimately leading to a better experience for users

A As the healthcare industry shifts focus from volume to value, standardization is needed to accurately benchmark labor resource utilization. This is the premise of a survey conducted by HealthLeaders Media and sponsored by Kronos. What constitutes direct patient care? Hands-on patient assessment, administering medications, and performing procedures clearly top the list. But can other activities be considered direct care too—even those not conducted in a patient’s presence?

IDC’s research shows enterprises around the world are using multicloud strategies to optimize the performance of modern and existing legacy applications running on-premises, in public cloud services, and on legacy systems. In the early days of enterprise cloud adoption, many organizations focused their cloud strategies on enabling net-new cloud-native applications written to take advantage of dynamic cloud infrastructure and pay-as-you-go consumption-based cost models. Early success with these implementations is convincing more and more enterprises to expand their cloud footprint and to migrate existing applications to cloud in order to enhance end-user experiences, optimize cloud resource utilization and costs, and create a more flexible and agile business environment.

As organizations continue to virtualize their infrastructures to gain higher levels of operational efficiency, VM sprawl and resource utilization are two key factors that can quickly create havoc for IT admins. In resource-siloed infrastructures, where multiple administrators are in charge of different pieces of the infrastructure, complexity continues to grow as mission-critical data sets and organizations grow. This is especially true in dynamic, mission-critical environments, where one wrong move or lack thereof could significantly impact an application, the end-user experience, or worst case, company revenue.

The impact of hyper-converged infrastructures on IT has been profound. In fact, 85% of respondents to a recent ESG survey already use or plan to use a hyper-converged solution in the coming months. Though that number appears high, it is not all that surprising. ESG also asked organizations to identify which factors drove them to deploy or considering deploying a hyper-conv

Data movement and management is a major pain point for organizations operating HPC environments. Whether you are deploying a single cluster, or managing a diverse research facility, you should be taking a data centric approach. As data volumes grow and the cost of compute drops, managing data consumes more of the HPC budget and computational time. The need for Data Centric HPC architectures grows dramatically as research teams pool their resources to purchase more resources and improve overall utilization. Learn more in this white paper about the key considerations when expanding from traditional compute-centric to data-centric HPC.

The shift to value-based reimbursement (VBR) entails more financial risk for providers. Successful management of the transition to VBR can only be achieved when healthcare organizations are clinically and financially integrated to ensure tight care coordination and efficient resource utilization. That level of integration requires the aid of a robust IT infrastructure to support the enterprise. This whitepaper offers the opportunity to learn about new tools for healthcare providers to manage financial challenges associated with value-based reimbursement

Virtualization has transformed the data center over the past decade. IT departments use virtualization to consolidate multiple server workloads onto a smaller number of more powerful servers. They use virtualization to scale existing applications by adding more virtual machines to support them, and they deploy new applications without having to purchase additional servers to do so. They achieve greater resource utilization by balancing workloads across a large pool of servers in real time—and they respond more quickly to changes in workload or server availability by moving virtual machines between physical servers. Virtualized environments support private clouds on which application engineers can now provision their own virtual servers and networks in environments that expand and contract on demand.

Because of the outstanding economy, flexibility, and service levels it offers, virtualization is transforming data centers at breakneck speed: by 2016, an estimated 80 percent of the world's x86 servers will be Virtual Machines (VMs). But the speed of this transformation, along with the high resource utilization, ease of cloning, moving workloads, and other ways virtualization works its magic, raise challenges for “traditional” IT services and the teams that deliver them.
