A well-planned cyberattack or an accidental download of malware can mean the difference between a productive day and all work grinding to a halt. As hackers get more sophisticated, organizations concerned about their bottom line and security of their customer, employee or student data must stay on top of security.

"We live and surf in a cyber world where attacks like APT, DDOS, Trojans and Ransomware are common and easy to execute. Domain names are an integral part of any business today and apparently an integral part of an attacker's plan too. Domain names are carriers of malwares, they act as Command and Control servers and malware's ex-filtrate data too. In today's threat landscape - predicting threats, spotting threats and mitigating them is super crucial.. This is called Visibility and Analytics. Watch this on demand session with our Cisco cloud security experts Shyam Ramaswamy and Fernando Ferrari as they talk about how Cisco Umbrella and The Umbrella Research team detect anomalies, block threats and identify compromised hosts. The experts also discuss how effectively Cisco spot, react, filter out IOC, block the network communications of a malware; identify and stop a phishing campaign (unknown ones too). "

Users are working off-hours, off-network, and off-VPN. Are you up on all the ways DNS can be used to secure them? If not, maybe it’s time to brush up. More than 91% of malware uses DNS to gain command and control, exfiltrate data, or redirect web traffic. Because DNS is a protocol used by all devices that connect to the internet, security at the DNS layer is critical for achieving the visibility and protection you need for any users accessing the internet. Learn how DNS-layer security can help you block threats before they reach your network or endpoints.

Today’s security appliances and agents must wait until malware reaches the perimeter or endpoint before they can detect or prevent it. OpenDNS arrests attacks earlier in the kill chain. Enforcing security at the DNS layer prevents a malicious IP connection from ever being established or a malicious file from ever being downloaded. This same DNS layer of network security can contain malware and any compromised system from exfiltrating data. Command & control (C2) callbacks to the attacker’s botnet infrastructure are blocked over any port or protocol. Unlike appliances, the cloud service protects devices both on and off the corporate network. Unlike agents, the DNS layer protects every device connected to the network — even IoT. It is the easiest and fastest layer of security to deploy everywhere.

As the number and severity of cyberattacks continue to grow with no end in sight, cybersecurity teams are implementing new tools and processes to combat these emerging threats. However, the oneoverriding requirement for meeting this challenge is improved speed. Whether it’s speed of detection, speed of remediation or other processes that now need to be completed faster, the ability to do things quickly is key to effective cybersecurity. The reason why speed is essential is simple: As the dwell time for malware increases, the lateral spread of an attack broadens, the number of potentially breached files expands, and the difficulty in remediating the threat increases. And the stealthy nature of many of the newer threats makes finding them faster?before they become harder to detect?a critical focus in reducing the impact of an intrusion. These requirements make it essential that security operations centers (SOCs) can complete their activities far more quickly, both now and moving forwa

A new report from Gigamon ATR helps security practitioners understand how Emotet, LokiBot and TrickBot traversed enterprise networks without detection in 2018. It particularly focuses on the malwares’ command and control (C2) and lateral movement, as these behaviors expose opportunities to observe network traffic, discover these threats and reduce risk. The goal: shorter mean time to detection and response, a more mature security program and a balanced approach to mitigating risk.

Security has always been a fast-paced field, but lately the pace has been accelerating. Malware is rapidly evolving. The ways payloads are being delivered and deployed are changing, too. New attack tools and exploit techniques are appearing more regularly. It’s taking less time for them to gain widespread adoption. For all of those reasons, we thought it would be valuable to share additional insight into the threatscape we shared in the 2018 Critical Watch Report.

The guide to how SQL Server 2008 end-of-service can drive IT modernization. End-of-service presents serious risks to your organisation if you don’t deal with it correctly—or worse—if you don’t deal with it at all, including the loss of access to critical security updates and Microsoft hotfixes. Also, if you don’t take action, your organisation will be exposed to potential disruption from hackers and malware. That means valuable customer data could be exposed to attack, risking monetary and reputational damage. And from a regulatory standpoint, there could be compliance issues with rules such as HIPAA, PCI, and GDPR. On the other hand, if you take well-considered action that aligns with your long-term strategy, end-of-service is also an opportunity for data estate modernisation. In this e-book, we’ll discuss how migration to Azure as part of your fix for SQL Server 2008 end-of-service solves for all these, and opens doors for the future of your data-driven business.

Enterprises, beware. Threat actors are continuing to eye businesses for high returns on investment in Q1 2019, breaching infrastructure, exfiltrating or holding data hostage, and abusing weak credentials for continued, targeted monitoring. From a steadfast increase of pervasive Trojans, such as Emotet, to a resurgence of ransomware lodged against corporate targets, cybercriminals are going after organizations with a vengeance. Yet every cloud has a silver lining, and for all the additional effort thrown at businesses, consumer threats are now on the decline. Ransomware against consumers has slowed down to a trickle and cryptomining, at a fever pitch against consumers this time last year, has all but died. Interestingly, this has resulted in an overall decline in the volume of malware detections from Q4 2018 to Q1 2019. While threat actors made themselves busy with challenging new victims, they ensnared targets in the old ways, using tried-and-true malspam and social engineering tactic

Ransomware has taken the world by storm. CryptoWall extorted an estimated $18 million, and WannaCry locked up more than 230,000 computers across the globe in 2017. Companies of all sizes are sitting up and taking notice. Even brands with a strong security investment have fallen victim. We’ve seen ransomware cripple businesses: nearly 19% of businesses stop operations immediately after discovering a ransomware attack.1 Hospital emergency rooms forced to turn people away; global shipping logistics experience massive disruption; and even a summer blockbuster movie held up for ransom. The FBI estimates ransomware is now a billion-dollar business. Ransomware has been around for a while, and it has spiked in recent years. It secured 5th place as the most common variety of malware in 2017, up from 22nd place in 2014.2 Originally ransomware targeted individuals and was considered a consumer nuisance. It has now become a business menace.
