Microsoft Lync is not only changing the cost structure of enterprise telephony, but is also ushering in a new user experience in which every communication is transformed into a more collaborative, engaging interaction. But it’s impossible to achieve the promises of Lync if you haven’t fully considered the underlying infrastructure. And with laptops, smartphones and tablets on track to outnumber desktops, that means wireless infrastructure. Fortunately, with a little upfront planning, you can dramatically increase the quality and reliability of multimedia over enterprise Wi-Fi. Here are 10 tips for ensuring that Lync runs well on mobile devices in your network…

Companies rely on knowledge assets, such as product formulas and customer databases. VPNs and network monitors can protect proprietary information from outsiders; but, they won't do much to prevent access by internal users. With the popularity of wireless networks, USB drives and other portable devices, it's all too easy for insiders to leak key data. This white paper explains how Trend Micro LeakProof 3.0 protects sensitive data at rest, in use, and in motion.

In addition to e-books, on-demand video and GPS devices, one of the future technological innovations envisioned by AT&T in its famous early 1990s series of “You Will” commercials was an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system that enabled drivers to wirelessly pay their tolls as they drove through a toll booth. While that prediction was perhaps not as bold as the others (Europe began developing similar ETC systems in the 1980s), today we take for granted E-ZPass in the U.S. and similar systems where drivers can enter toll roads, HOV lanes, bridges and tunnels without having to stop at a tollbooth to pay. Typically, these systems require a driver to put an OBU (On Board Unit, which can be called transponder or “edge” IoT device) in their vehicle and, when their vehicle passes through a toll booth, the toll booth wirelessly connects to the edge to automatically deduct the toll from their bank account.

Wireless technology surrounds us — in the workplace, at home, and many places in between. Mobile phones, WiFi networks, wireless computer accessories, and cordless phones all use radio transmissions for wireless communication. Even devices not used for communication, such as microwave ovens and lighting systems, emit radio frequency energy that can impact wireless devices. In this crowded radio environment, two technologies have emerged as the standard for wireless voice communication in UC and enterprise applications.

IT has gone through a significant evolution over the past decade. Virtualization has changed the entire face of the data center, the network edge has become predominantly wireless and consumer devices reign supreme. However, one of the few areas of IT that has yet to evolve is the corporate wide area network (WAN). Managing the WAN is something network managers have always struggled with because WAN speeds are typically an order of magnitude, or more, slower than local area networks (LANs).
