The digitization of data has empowered both healthcare providers and patients to improve how, when and where healthcare is administered, giving patients greater control over their personal health and well-being. The key to success lies in the ability to get the right information to the right people at the right time. And a crucial enabler of improved communications is the ability to transfer data across like and disparate systems through mobile technology. This was the topic at a recent focus group Comcast Business held at HIMSS14 that included healthcare IT professionals from six leading healthcare providers. The participants shared the following insights on how advancements in data mobility can engage the entire healthcare ecosystem and help improve patient outcomes. Like healthcare organizations elsewhere, reducing readmissions had become a top priority by 2011. Advocate, the state’s largest healthcare provider, had just signed its first shared savings agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois to become one of the first commercial accountable care organizations (ACOs) in the country. This event, along with others such as signing up as a Medicare Shared Savings Provider, led to re-evaluating the care continuum throughout Advocate Health’s 250 sites of care, including 13 acute-care hospitals, two children’s hospitals and a growing home healthcare division.

Healthcare technologies have proven their worth for practitioners and facilities in increasing the quality of patient care while saving time and streamlining operations. In some cases, however, the benefits of these technologies are outweighed by their impact on the network, slowing network performance sometimes to the point of ineffectiveness.Software-defined networking can be the bridge to help healthcare providers update their networks and avoid disruption. SDN helps organizations save money on networking infrastructure, reduces the complexity of managing networks, enhances security through added intelligence and simplifies compliance, among other benefits.

Technology has had a truly transformative impact on the healthcare space. Thanks to innovations in technology, tools and their respective processes, the practice of treating patients has shifted from mostly reactive to proactive, enabling physicians and caregivers to approach healthcare in a more holistic fashion. As part of that shift, hospitals, wellness centers and physicians’ offices are focusing on providing value over volume1, taking healthcare beyond the four walls of the facility and into patients’ homes, places of work and social centers. The concept of whole health is much easier to attain with technology such as artificial intelligence, analytics, wearables and mobile health (mHealth) apps, to name a few.

Reliable and secure network connectivity is no longer optional. It supports critical priorities for healthcare providers, including enhancing patient care outcomes, improving operational efficiency and boosting financial returns. If a healthcare provider’s network infrastructure is not resilient, reliable and secure, the provider will not be able to reap the benefits of its healthcare IT investments.

The “consumerization” of healthcare and sweeping policy changes will require that healthcare providers become more competitive or risk being left behind. Gaining the competitive edge means finding scalable efficiencies, leveraging the wealth of available patient data for improved care, and figuring out how to meet (or sometimes treat) patients where they already are—whether that happens to be at work, at the mall, or on the street. While Machine to Machine (M2M) and Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT) technologies promise to create massive efficiencies and a transformed patient experience, traditional wired connectivity solutions are often costly, difficult to deploy, and don’t offer the flexibility required for effective M2M and IoHT deployments.

Healthcare IT Enabled by 4G LTE It’s time for healthcare providers to change the way they think about their services. No longer is healthcare simply about healing sick patients in the confines of the office or hospital. Growing competition driven by changes in public policy and consumer expectations mean that healthcare organizations must find ways to meet patients where they want and need healthcare the most—which requires extending care, and connectivity, beyond the boundaries of traditional healthcare facilities.

With its skilled nursing facilities located in remote areas of a state known for its unpredictable and sometimes violent weather, Texas-based Creative Solutions in Healthcare (CSNH) was suffering more than its share of network interruptions. According to CIO & CISO Shawn Wiora, the company was losing network connectivity multiple times each week. This downtime not only disrupted business continuity, but was bad for morale among both the company’s IT workers and its care-delivery staff. Creative Solutions in Healthcare wanted a network connectivity solution capable of delivering highly secure, uninterrupted, and centrally managed service.

Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) technologies are expected to permeate day-to-day business as well as customer activity. Industries such as healthcare (advanced diagnosis and treatment), transportation (advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles), and life sciences (rare disease treatment research) are some of the early adopters of AI. The goal for any organization adopting AI/ML/DL is to deliver meaningful insights and predictions that can significantly improve products, processes, or services across industries and use cases. Today, as AI becomes mainstream, many organizations find themselves in the initial proof-of-concept (POC) stage; only a few are in full production. IDC's 2019 Artificial Intelligence Global Adoption Trends and Strategies Survey found that 18% of organizations had AI models in production, 16% were in the POC stage, and 15% were experimenting with AI.
