IT virtualization, the engine behind cloud computing, can have significant consequences on the data center physical infrastructure (DCPI). Higher power densities that often result can challenge the cooling capabilities of an existing system. Reduced overall energy consumption that typically results from physical server consolidation may actually worsen the data center’s power usage effectiveness (PUE). Dynamic loads that vary in time and location may heighten the risk of downtime if rack-level power and cooling health are not understood and considered. Finally, the fault-tolerant nature of a highly virtualized environment could raise questions about the level of redundancy required in the physical infrastructure. These particular effects of virtualization are discussed and possible solutions or methods for dealing with them are offered.

AWS is the most widely deployed public cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) solution in the world and is a leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for IaaS (see "Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service"). AWS offers a large number of built-in security capabilities (see Note 1), and questions on the proper practices for securing workloads in AWS are increasing.1 AWS is a not a "consumer grade" IaaS cloud. It is a market leader, with a portfolio of security capabilities and security ecosystem partners unmatched by other IaaS providers. However, simply moving existing workloads to AWS without rethinking security tools, processes and system management will result in workloads that are less secure than they were when located within enterprise data centers. Conversely, a properly managed and secured workload in AWS will be at least as — and, in most cases, more — secure than in an enterprise data center.

Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks. To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data. This enhanced the IT department's responsiveness to the business, allowed them to shift to real-time inventory, and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs. Operations were simplified by reducing person-hours needed for infrastructure maintenance by 75 percent.
