Software plays a central role in business processes and in our daily lives, and companies of all sizes and industries are building, buying and downloading more applications than ever before. However, this increased dependence on software makes the applications powering our world a prime target for cybercriminals. Applications are the No. 1 attack vector for cybercriminals and the main source of breaches. In addition, the way software is developed is changing. Contemporary application development methodologies like DevOps are increasing the speed and precision with which software is produced and deployed. The increased speed and precision have created a modern software factory akin to the manufacturing factories of past industrial revolutions.

Email. It’s the number-one business application used by organizations. It’s also the number-one method used to execute cyberattacks, enabling malware delivery, phishing, impersonations, and the spread of threats that are already internal to your organization. In fact, 91 percent of all cyberattacks start with an email. And your organization can’t function for long without email. How many hours of email downtime can your organization comfortably live with? If email isn’t accessible due to an adverse incident like malicious intent, human error or technical failure, your organization would likely suffer. The only way to get ahead of cybercriminals and to holistically protect your business is to adopt a new approach to email security. You need a multidimensional approach that brings together threat protection, adaptability, durability and recoverability in a single cloud-based service. You need to enable these four dimensions to truly provide cyber resilience for your email.

Have you ever wished for an army of clones to do all your thankless tasks and chores? Well, that fantasy is becoming a reality—at least on the Internet. And while they may not be actual clones, bots have begun doing lots of digital dirty work. Managing your relationship with bots—good and bad—has become an inherent part of doing business in a connected world. With more than half of online traffic initiated by autonomous programs, it’s clear that bots are a driving force of technological change, and they’re here to stay. As bot technology, machine learning, and AI continue to evolve, so will the threats they pose. And while some bots are good, many are malicious—and the cybercriminals behind them are targeting your apps. Preparing your organization to deal with the impact of bots on your business is essential to developing a sustainable strategy that will enable you to grow as you adapt to the new bot-enabled world.

Email. You use it constantly. And it’s the number-one application to keep your organization functioning, lines of communication flowing, and productivity seamless. Organizations need email to stay up-and running all the time. After all, it’s supposed to just work, right? This is where trouble often sets in. Cybercriminals use email constantly, too. It’s the number-one vector used to initiate attacks like malware delivery (think ransomware), impersonations and phishing attacks. In fact, almost 90% of organizations* have seen the volume of phishing attacks either rise or stay the same over the past 12 months. Internal threats have also been on the rise: Most organizations have encountered internal threats driven by careless employees (88%), compromised accounts (80%) or malicious insiders (70%) over the last year.

Cybercriminals are now using more than 50 different forms of ransomware to target and extort money from unsuspecting individuals and businesses. Ransomware attacks are pervasive. More than 4,000 ransomware attacks happen every day, and the volume of attacks is increasing at a rate of 300 percent annually. According to an IDT911 study, 84 percent of small and midsize businesses will not meet or report ransomware demands. No one is safe from ransomware, as it attacks enterprises and SMBs, government agencies, and individuals indiscriminately. While ransomware demands more than doubled in 2016 to $679 from $294 in 2015, the cost of remediating the damage and lost productivity is many multiples higher.

As the threat landscape evolves, so must our security controls and countermeasures. Recent research from F5 Labs revealed that applications are the initial targets in the majority of breaches, suggesting that any app can be an attack vector. Cybercriminals are moving their tactics further up the stack using sophisticated application-layer exploits, as well as an emerging wave of automated, bot, and IoTbased threats that are quite capable of evading simple signature or reputation-based detection. Yet, the majority of WAFs on the market today have remained largely unchanged, leaving the applayer exposed, unable to proactively monitor and protect against evolving attack vectors.

Exploits are one of the main techniques used by cybercriminals to spread malware. They take advantage of weaknesses in legitimate software products like Flash and Microsoft Office to infect computers for their criminal ends. A single exploit can be used by myriad separate pieces of malware, all with different payloads. Read this paper to learn more about exploits and how to stop them. We’ll explore how exploits work, the exploit industry overall, what makes a good exploit in the eyes of the cybercriminals, and also how anti-exploit technology is a highly efficient and effective way to secure your organization against advanced and unknown threats.

Of all the industries targeted by cyber-attackers, financial services is one of the most attractive. As noted bank robber Willie Sutton once said, “Go where the money is … and go there often.” That, it seems, is what cybercriminals are doing, launching malware, Trojans, spear phishing and ransomware attacks at banks and institutions to compromise networks and gain access to valuable data. Today, a range of diverse cyber-adversaries — including nation-states, cybercriminals, competitors, hacktivists, and insiders/contractors — pose financial, reputational and regulatory risk to industrial and critical infrastructure organizations. The business impact can include costly production downtime, safety failures, and environmental release of hazardous materials, as well as theft of corporate secrets such as sensitive information about formulas and proprietary manufacturing processes. The challenge is compounded as organizations adopt digitization initiatives and IT/OT convergence to support the business — removing any “air-gaps” that may have existed in the past. To help security and operations teams stay ahead of the latest ICS/SCADA threats, CyberX — the industrial cybersecurity company founded by military cyber experts with nation-state experience securing critical infrastructure — has partnered with SANS to create educational content about emerging ICS threat vectors and
