MIT Technology Review Survey: Executive Summary Are you prepared for the next breach? Only 6% of leaders say yes. Information security—or, the lack of it—is firmly on the radar for business and IT leaders in organizations of all sizes and in every sector. Many fear that their companies are ill-prepared to prevent, detect, and effectively respond to various types of cyberattacks, and a shortage of in-house security expertise remains of widespread concern. Those are among the initial findings of the Cybersecurity Challenges, Risks, Trends, and Impacts Survey, conducted by MIT Technology Review of approx. 225 business and IT executives, in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise Security Services and FireEye Inc.

Cyberattacks are now a fact of life. Yet detection still lags. In 2015, the median amount of time attackers spent inside organizations before detection was 146 days. Why are we so vulnerable? MIT Technology Review asks Andrzej Kawalec, chief technology officer for HPE Security Services and Marshall Heilman, vice-president and executive director at Mandiant, a FireEye company, what we can do to make our systems more secure.

Organizations continue to adopt cloud computing at a rapid pace to benefit from increased efficiency, better scalability, and faster deployments. As more workloads are shifting to the cloud, cybersecurity professionals remain concerned about security of data, systems, and services in the cloud. To cope with new security challenges, security teams are forced to reassess their security posture and strategies as traditional security tools are often not suited for the challenges of dynamic, virtual and distributed cloud environments. This technology challenge is only exacerbated by the dramatic shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals.

Achieving and maintaining a high level of information security requires information security professionals with robust skills as well as organisational, technical and operational capabilities. The gap between intent and ability to be secure is evident in our sample of UK large enterprises. Deficient companies will only close that gap when they acquire the necessary capabilities. Some of these capabilities can be purchased as information security tools or application solutions, but it is more prudent for an organisation to consider acquiring these capabilities through a service arrangement with a dedicated security services partner.

Despite long-standing concerns captured in a myriad of surveys, security in the cloud has progressed to a more practical and achievable level. The cloud represents a shared security responsibility model whereby that responsibility is split between the Cloud Service Provider and the cloud customer. For organisations moving some or all of their applications and data to the cloud, acceptance of this model clears the way to more thoughtful consideration for how security can and should be architected — from the ground up. As a result, IT and IT Security leaders now have a much clearer trajectory to support their business operations in the cloud in a secure manner.

Technical Tests are designed to cover specific services. Each security test has its own objectives and acceptable levels of risk. There is not an individual technique that provides a comprehensive picture of an organisation’s security when executed alone. A qualified third party can work with you to determine what combination of techniques you should use to evaluate your security posture and controls to begin to determine where you may be vulnerable.

GDPR will pose different challenges to each organisation. Understanding and acting on the implications for your own organisation is vital. That means taking a risk-based approach to ensure that you are doing what you need to do to manage your own specific risks to personal information. While virtually all organisations will have to implement changes to become GDPR compliant, some will be able to take partial advantage of existing compliance to other security mandates and frameworks, such as ISO 27001 and PCI by extending those measures to protection of personal data. Even so, further work will be required to comply with GDPR, both with regards to security and its other aspects.

As customers demand and expect more of a digitized experience, the scale and volume of secure data that’s being transmitted across the network is increasing exponentially. At the same time, across the APAC region high digital connectivity, contrasted with low cybersecurity awareness, growing cross-border data transfers and weak regulations have made this data a global target. The growth in the “as-a-service” nature of the cybercrime marketplace is also fueling an increase in the number of traditional crime groups and individuals drawn into cyber offending. New sources of vulnerability from mobile, BYOD, CYOD, web-services and IoT devices are further broadening the cyber threat landscape with ever-more sophisticated forms of malware and DDoS attacks. Download the IDC Report to get some tips on how to stay protected against cybercrime.

For most financial institutions, it’s no longer a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’ they’ll be attacked.. If you’re like most financial institutions, you have controls that identify breaches, but need proper procedures that’ll enable you to recover from such an event. In this presentation at the CUNA Technology Council Conference, Tom Neclerio, BAE Systems’ VP of Cyber Consulting Services, discusses the current threats across the financial marketplace and explores strategies for implementing a successful incident response program as outlined in the FFIEC’s cyber resilience guidance.

The rise of the cloud and mobile computing has rapidly changed the nature of enterprise cybersecurity. The old paradigm, where all work was done behind a company firewall, has been breaking down. Employees work not just at the office, but also on the road and at home, on mobile devices and on their own personal computers. They’re no longer using a limited stack of enterprise applications. Instead, they increasingly require access to a wide variety of apps, cloud services, and new communication platforms.

"Financial services institutions are high-value targets for cyberattacks because of the capital they control, the personal information on customers they maintain, and the fear an attack on a bank generates in the public. Phishing attacks on FSIs have risen steadily, especially employee credential theft - because once an employee’s credentials are stolen, cyberattackers can access customer information, employee data, even finances. While legacy security solutions claim to block up to 99.9 percent of cyberattacks, all it takes is one employee or contractor to open an email from an unknown source, download a file from a compromised website, or in any other way fall victim to a cyberattack. So, it’s time for a new approach: Isolation, also known as, remote browsing. Download this Financial Services Best Practices Guide to Isolation to learn how to best eliminate phishing attacks and web malware. "
