Virtualization has moved to the forefront of many organizations’ IT agendas, because it reduces both the number of physical servers required and the associated costs. This independent study by the International Technology group found IBM PowerVM more cost-competitive over time, compared to VMware, in terms of IT costs and the costs of downtime.

This technical white paper presents benchmark results showing greater VM consolidation ratios than demonstrated in previous benchmarks and demonstrating the extent of the performance lead that PowerVM virtualization technologies deliver over x86-based add-on virtualization products. The tests, running two workload benchmarks of different consolidation ratios on POWER7 processor-based and comparable Intel-based systems, demonstrate the exceptional performance and scalability of PowerVM virtualization technologies compared to VMware vSphere1 on an x86-based platform.

Two years ago Clabby Analytics wrote a report that evaluated Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) and revealed shortcomings in the UCS design, stating that Cisco blade environments are “good enough” computing environment. Since then Cisco made improvements to their system design, but the blade market didn’t stand still waiting for them to catch up as IBM announced a new system design: the IBM Flex System. Continue on to this new assessment from Clabby Analytics that compares Cisco’s UCS blade server offering to IBM Flex System’s in a soup-to-nuts evaluation. Also find out how these two major players compare to the competitors in the blade marketplace.

Analyst Wayne Kernochan of Infostructure Associates documents the analytics speed-up capability of DB2 with BLU Acceleration and explains how DB2 BLU compares with competitors. His conclusion after reviewing test results? Not surprisingly, the results verified a consistent, roughly order-of-magnitude speedup using BLU Acceleration, against DB2 pre-BLU and against some obvious competitors. What is his advice to readers about DB2 BLU? If your upcoming database needs analytics/BI/reporting-related, why would you not use BLU Acceleration for them? In other words, what are you waiting for?

In this Research Report, Clabby Analytics takes a closer look at IBM’s Flex System converged architecture. The new Flex System’s advanced blade offering shines compared to its closest rival: traditional blade architecture. Flex System offers superior manageability, faster communications, more storage capacity (using up to eight internal solid state drives [SSDs] per compute node) and better storage management — as well as broader/better physical/virtual system management — than all of today’s leading blade competitors.

For many years, companies have been building data warehouses to analyze business activity and produce insights for decision makers to act on to improve business performance. These traditional analytical systems are often based on a classic pattern where data from multiple operational systems is captured, cleaned, transformed and integrated before loading it into a data warehouse. Typically, a history of business activity is built up over a number of years allowing organizations to use business intelligence (BI) tools to analyze, compare and report on business performance over time. In addition, subsets of this data are often extracted from data warehouses into data marts that have been optimized for more detailed multi-dimensional analysis.

With a wealth of information readily available online, consumers are now better able to compare products, services and prices—even as they shop in physical stores. When consumers interact with retailers publicly through social media, they have greater power to influence other customers or damage a brand. These and other changes in the retail industry are creating important opportunities for retailers. But to capitalize on those opportunities, retailers need ways to collect, manage and analyze a tremendous volume, variety and velocity of data.

These and other changes in the retail industry are creating important opportunities for retailers. But to capitalize on those opportunities, retailers need ways to collect, manage and analyze a tremendous volume, variety and velocity of data. If retailers succeed in addressing the challenges of “big data,” they can use this data to generate valuable insights for personalizing marketing and improving the effectiveness of marketing campaigns, optimizing assortment and merchandising decisions, and removing inefficiencies in distribution and operations.

IBM’s new PowerLinux servers appeal to Linux buyers? Linux buyers are driven by the price advantages that Linux offers as compared with other operating environments (Linux is free open source code) Windows and Unix are chargeable licensed code). Linux buyers, therefore, look first and foremost at the total cost of acquisition of Linux based servers. Linux buyers also want rapid time to value (fast deployment); they often use decentralized procurement processes; they want their Linux servers to be simple to use and manage."

Philip Howard of Bloor Research compares performance capabilities of the leading BI platforms. Companies studied in this comparison are IBM (Cognos, DB2 with BLU Acceleration), SAP (BusinessObjects, HANA), Oracle (Business Intelligence, Exadata) and Microsoft (Business Intelligence, SQL Server). His conclusion? "DB2 with BLU Acceleration should not only provide better performance in the first place but also provide consistent performance, with a corresponding requirement for less hardware and less cost."
