The cloud — at one point it was a revolution in the workplace. Now it is simply accepted as an efficient way to get business done. Most of today’s IT security was built to protect a well-defined network infrastructure, but that is yesterday’s architecture. When users and assets move outside the network perimeter where the traditional security stack can no longer protect them, your enterprise is exposed to an entirely new set of risks. And with more apps and sensitive data living in the cloud or on mobile devices, gaps emerge that leave organizations susceptible to attacks. Read this flipbook to see how you can take your security to new heights. We'll explain the challenges driving the shift in the market and how you can take advantage of these changes and improve security for your organization.

Your users, especially when working outside of the office, no longer need to always connect to the corporate network to get work done. They often connect directly to SaaS apps. And, let’s face it, employees also don’t turn on the VPN if they’re using their work laptop for personal use — which means they’re left with very little security protection. Plus, many organizations are now using direct internet connections at branch offices, which means employees and guest users don’t get the protection of your traditional security stack. Not only are more offices connecting directly to the internet — it’s estimated that 70% of branch offices already have some direct internet access — but attackers recognize these weak points in their targets and have started exploiting them more. To solve these new challenges, security controls must also shift to the cloud. This in-depth white paper describes how security must evolve to protect users anywhere they access the internet.

As security threats increase and government regulations require more control over users and data, it is important for organizations to evolve their security measures. As enterprises rapidly expand their footprints into cloud, mobile and social, they must ensure that the right users have the right access to sensitive data and applications. Strong as well as optimized identities are becoming increasingly important as insider threat and tightened regulations become more prevalent.

"Mobile and cloud deployment issues are dominating the concerns of organizations today. End-user mobility and flexibility versus IT control and visibility are the opposing requirements challenging even the most nimble of environments. Organizations are searching for several key capabilities to address this dichotomy: • Infrastructure that is optimized for end users to drive down costs, simplify acquisition, upgrade easily, and support policy management • Flexibility in delivering workspaces to users—on-premises, cloud, and offline—all within a unified workspace with single sign-on • Management capabilities encompassing the entire ecosystem and providing security, compliance, and management of day-to-day end-user environments Download this asset to learn how VMware addresses these needs more effectively than Citrix with the VMware mobile-cloud architect."

Part of a strong foundation for cloud-first, mobile-first IT includes supporting BYOD. BYOD can improve end user satisfaction and enable employees to work anywhere from any device. To really get these benefits though, the end-user experience must provide seamless access to the applications end-users want and need. Accomplishing this starts with extending app provisioning to mobile devices, and automatically deprovisioning mobile access as part of the identity lifecycle. For the best user experience, you’ll want automatic configuration of native mobile applications with mobile SSO, security settings and app settings like usernames, URLs and tenant IDs.

Within 6 months of starting to use Okta, customers on average will connect more than 10 applications for single sign-on. Once single-sign-on is tackled, cloud-first IT organizations can start to tackle the next set of problems. These next challenges are all about how you manage identities across all connected systems, how to determine who has access to what, and how you maintain control over user access. Some of the largest organizations in the world spend millions of dollars building out complex workflow systems to manage these processes. Even then, they depend heavily on manual work to actually get the job done. With Okta, there is a better way to do this, and it’s accessible to organizations of all sizes. Okta Provisioning gives you a foundation for cloud-first IT that brings sanity to your IT processes and enables you to encourage business groups to keep adopting more applications and users to bring the devices of their choice to work. Cloud-first, mobile-first organizations are seeing huge benefits from taking a more distributed approach to IT. Business units are given more freedom to evaluate and select SaaS applications that will enable efficiency and growth. Users are given more freedom to use the devices that make them the most productive. When this trend started, most IT organizations were able to implement some basic, manual processes to administer and govern IT in this best-of-breed distributed environment. However, as the number of touchpoints increases, IT needs to automate to keep pace. This paper goes into more detail on the top 5 reasons to automate identity lifecycle and identity administration and build a solid foundation for future cloud-first, mobile-first IT.

Most organizations want to leverage the cloud, but also recognize that migrating all their applications at once is not always practical. They are seeking ways to utilize cloud-based services while maintaining certain applications on-premise. For organizations utilizing this hybrid architecture, one of their major challenges is providing users with the flexibility to seamlessly move around the environment while still maintaining appropriate security levels—or more specifically, ensuring consistent control and security policy between on-premise applications and cloud services.

The modern enterprise workforce poses new challenges for IT. Today’s employees work in more places, on more devices— personal or company-owned—and over more networks than ever, using a diverse array of datacenter applications, mobile apps, SaaS and cloud services. As they move among apps, networks and devices, IT needs to be able to control access and ensure data and application security without impeding productivity. That means enabling users to get to work quickly and easily in any scenario without having to deal with different ways of accessing each app. Traditional VPNs and point solutions add complexity for both users and IT, increase costs and fail to enable a holistic approach to business mobility. Over the years, many IT organizations have addressed these evolving requirements through point solutions and by case-by-case configuration of access methods. The resulting fragmented experience poses a key roadblock to productivity and increases user frustration. For IT, the lack of a

When your cloud performs better, so does your business. IT is being challenged to react faster to growing customer demands. So to meet the requirements of their end users, IT organizations are increasingly turning to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) private clouds for their ability to swiftly deploy and scale IT infrastructure. But not just any OpenStack® cloud stands up to the demands of a production-scale environment or can meet your performance, scalability, and security standards. Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® OpenStack Platform does, and will help you gain a competitive advantage.

This paper covers some of the critical security gaps today’s mobile-cloud enterprises must address: • Unsecured devices. Unsecured devices allow users to easily access business data from mobile apps or cloud services simply by entering their credentials into an app or browser on the device. Once on the device, data can be easily compromised or shared with unauthorized, external sources. • Unmanaged apps. These typically include business apps, such as Office 365 productivity apps, that the user has downloaded from a personal app store instead of the enterprise app store. As a result, these apps are not under IT control but can still be used to access business content once the user enters his or her credentials. • Unsanctioned cloud services. Most enterprise cloud services have associated ecosystems of apps and services that integrate using APIs. While the enterprise cloud service might be sanctioned, apps and services from its ecosystem might not be.

In the PC era, employees operated from within a well defined enterprise IT perimeter and passwords were sufficient to establish user trust. However, in today’s mobile-cloud environment, the enterprise perimeter has dissolved and business information is available to users on a variety of endpoints, apps, services, networks, locations. In this dynamic access environment, organizations need a different approach to security that is able to: • Establish user trust using multiple factor authentication • Correlate user trust with other factors such as endpoint, app, network, and more • Apply adaptive, risk-based policies that match the user’s environment

In recent years, the market for mobile and cloud technologies has completely shifted the behavior of enterprise users. People can now work anywhere, on any device, to access business apps and data from mobile apps and cloud services. Static, perimeter-based security can no longer keep up with all of the endpoints, users, apps, and data that travel far beyond the corporate firewall. Relying on old security approaches like password-only access control is no longer enough to secure this vast mobile-cloud infrastructure — especially since stolen user credentials were the top cause of data breaches in 2017.
