Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. At the time this definition was published, “cloud” was already part of industry parlance, and was beginning to take root in the general lexicon. Additionally, global business spending for infrastructure and services related to the cloud had topped $78 billion. This year, enterprise spending on the cloud will reach an estimated $174 billion, and is expected to climb to $235 billion by 2017.2 Inevitably, as both business IT and consumer mindsets evolve toward the cloud in coming years, we will continue to witness dramatic growth in IT products in some areas, and significant reductions in other areas—resulting in a reshaping of the industry as a whole.

The client had an extensive global multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) network with over 30 Gbps of bandwidth. However, the client was experiencing bandwidth growth of >30% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and foresaw increasing demands for multi-media applications, data center to data center traffic, and cloud solution usage to support its business units and global workforce. It became crucial for the client to re-architect their current network to support growth and provide a globally consistent user experience at lower cost. With 40% of their WAN traffic being http internet traffic, they needed regional internet service provider (ISP) breakouts. The client needed a lower cost/MB high capacity WAN backbone for better application performance and cloud optimization. Their network needed to be scalable to poise them for anticipated growth and offer improved site connectivity options.

A leading U.S.-based financial services firm was faced with the growing challenge of providing consistent application performance to a vast employee base and nationwide network of partners. The company turned to Equinix to help redesign its network, both to improve performance and prepare for a move to a cloud-enabled environment. Equinix worked with the firm to deploy bi-coastal Equinix Performance Hubs, extension nodes of the company’s existing network placed in strategically located Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers. A Performance Hub moves services closer to end users and provides direct access to networks and cloud providers. By deploying Performance Hubs, the customer created a high-performance services platform for its business. The result was a dramatic decrease in network latency, improvements in application performance and an enhanced user experience.

Collaboration services, email, managed services, and backups and disaster recovery are the most common current use cases for cloud services, according to the results of a new SANS survey on cloud security. The 485 IT professionals who participated in the survey reported using a variety of cloud providers and service models, including software-as-aservice (SaaS) cloud offerings, along with a fairly even mix of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) implementations. Most respondents said they are investing in both public and private clouds as needs dictate.

AWS is the most widely deployed public cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) solution in the world and is a leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for IaaS (see "Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service"). AWS offers a large number of built-in security capabilities (see Note 1), and questions on the proper practices for securing workloads in AWS are increasing.1 AWS is a not a "consumer grade" IaaS cloud. It is a market leader, with a portfolio of security capabilities and security ecosystem partners unmatched by other IaaS providers. However, simply moving existing workloads to AWS without rethinking security tools, processes and system management will result in workloads that are less secure than they were when located within enterprise data centers. Conversely, a properly managed and secured workload in AWS will be at least as — and, in most cases, more — secure than in an enterprise data center.

Effective security for cloud-hosted web applications requires full visibility into the environment in which the apps live and the potential exposure to vulnerabilities — and to do so consistently, while proactively monitoring for attacks without causing delays in application development and delivery. Cloud adoption means that a focus on perimeter security is not sufficient and may even be obstructive, because it can impact application performance and availability. Similarly, relying on your cloud service provider’s security services is insufficient; any provider will tell you that securing the cloud environment is a shared responsibility between cloud service provider and customer, and the responsibility for specifically securing web applications is the sole responsibility of the customer. And although the industry as a whole has become better at protecting lower-level network and server resources, as attackers look for targets, they are moving up the application stack.
